Surnames are gated by the ethnicity you rolled — you can only draw from your own pool, which is why players chasing a specific surname reroll ethnicity first. Counts are the developers' own figures from the official Trello.

The counterintuitive part

Japanese has the smallest surname pool at 559, despite being 95% of all ethnicity rolls. So the overwhelming majority of players draw from the narrowest list in the game, which is why the same handful of surnames turn up repeatedly on every server, while a rare European roll opens the widest pool at 838.

Nameplates

Your nameplate shows your surname in Japanese — kanji for surnames the game knows, katakana transliteration for the rest. The outline colour of the plate is your school year: blue for First Year, purple for Second Year, and a third colour for Third Year.

That is what the coloured outline on someone's nameplate means — it is their school year, not a rank, a gang or a purchase. Year, age and birthday are generated automatically and have no effect on combat stats.

Changing your name

First names are chosen and re-chosen by the player. Surnames come out of the reroll system along with your ethnicity, which is why the two questions are really one question — see reroll odds.
